Smolna Street is a space strongly inscribed in the history and identity of Warsaw.
It is a place that once gave the capital chic and metropolitan grandeur. A place that was destroyed and forgotten. A place whose history is still being created...
Smolna then
Smolna was well-developed by the end of the 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, it pleased the eye with its elegant tenement houses. Two were exceptional – numbers 23 and 25, facing Smolna with open courtyards. The first school with Polish as the language of instruction and the predecessor of today’s Warsaw School of Economics were established on this street.

Smolna soon
The new tenement house at Smolna 23 is being built on the site of the pre-World War II building frontage that was burned during the Warsaw Uprising. Its construction is the beginning of efforts to restore the urban fabric of Warsaw. Inspiration for the architects included archival photos of Smolna Street from its heyday.
